Lived
Experience Media Training + Story Telling
Let me be your media coach!
My two-hour media training workshop is delivered via Zoom or in-person. It’s designed to guide people with lived experience of drug use in sharing their story with the media. I’ve delivered it on behalf of SMART Recovery Australia; UnHarm (StoryLab campaign); Uniting Church (Fair Treatment campaign) and more.
I wear two hats here: as a journalist and as someone who has spoken publicly about their lived experience. We’ll cover how to create a compelling story, how to brief producers and journalists, how to do your research into a media outlet, how to deal with difficult questions and what kind of language to best use.
I've written about drug use and treatment – or talked about my own – in The Age, the ABC, Vice, The Saturday Paper and Guardian Australia, and was a core member of AOD Media Watch, which responds to stigmatising, inaccurate and salacious reporting on drug use in the media. For five years I was a board director for SMART Recovery Australia, and I was an ambassador for Monash University's BrainPark. I have a graduate certificate in Alcohol and Other Drugs from Turning Point/Monash University, and have delivered talks at Turning Point and Uniting, which operates Australia's first safe injecting room.

I also have a two-hour storytelling workshop specifically aimed at people with lived experience, be they AOD clients or workers. Exploring our own stories is vital for sense-making and growth.
